Stick It: Serious About Drums and Percussion
Stick It was an American drum magazine that was published from 1998 to 2000. The magazine was created and published by John Schroeter, a musician, author, and publisher known for his work in the guitar industry (books and magazines including Fingerstyle Guitar, Between the Strings, Collectible Guitar) and as an award-winning producer.
HistoryThe magazine's name was inspired by the 1972 Buddy Rich album "Stick It!" Schroeter, a passionate drummer himself, saw an opportunity to create a publication that catered to the interests of both drummers and percussionists across all musical genres, facilitating a fusion of styles and techniques (e.g., salsa patterns for drum set in a jazz setting, the expansion of paradiddles in drum set soloing, the integration of percussion instruments into drum set setups, and other concepts).
ContentThe magazine featured interviews with notable drummers spanning Steve Gadd to Steve Smith, Elvin Jones to Charlie Watts, Nigel Olsson to Luis Conte, to Alex van Halen to Alex Acuna. Each issue also included a companion CD featuring the magazine's music. This multimedia approach was innovative for its time and set Stick It apart from other music publications.
Notable ContributorsThroughout its run, Stick It featured contributions from industry professionals. Cathy Rich, daughter of the legendary drummer Buddy Rich, assisted in the production of a feature story on her father, which included previously unreleased recordings on the magazine's companion CD.
Cessation of PublicationDespite its popularity, Stick It faced challenges due to the changing landscape of media consumption and the rise of digital content. After being acquired by the publishers of Drum magazine, Stick It ceased publication, leaving a void in the drumming community.
